Węgierska Górka was very important point of resistance during defensive war in 1939. Of the total of 16 combat bunkers, which were supposed to close the valley, until the outbreak of the war only 5 of them were built. Fortifications were conquered after three days of difficult battles, at which time Germany lost about 200 soldiers. The defence of Węgierska Górka is one of the most important episodes of all defensive wars in Poland in 1939, which has been given the honorable name of „Westerplatte of the South”.
Węgierska Górka, the industrial settlement, in 1939 had favourable conditions to become a natural defensive place – narroved valley of Soła river was surrounded by acclivities of Barania Góra (1220 m a.s.l.), Glinne (1026 m a.s.l.), Mała Barania (659 m a.s.l.) from the west, villages Cięcina, Żabnica, Cisiec and acclivities of Romanka (1366m a.s.l), Hala Rysianka (1322 m a.s.l.), Hala Lipowska (1324 m a.s.l.), Prusów (1010 m a.s.l.) from the east.
1 September 1939 at daybreak on the border with Zwardoń german attack on Węgierska Górka, Żywiec and Bielsko had been launched – it was 7th Bavarian Infantry Division, where during the World War I Adolf Hitler served and another smaller German units, which were part of XVII Corps of General Kienitz and 14 Army of General List. Commanding oficers name was Eugen Otto. Those units were well armed with armoured equipment and heavy guns, German troops numbered about 17,000 soldiers and were supported by Luftwaffe. Polish Border Protections Corps „Berezwecz”, National Defence „Żywiec” and small group of The Border Guard had only 1,200 soldiers, then outnumber of german forces was crushing.
The heroing defence of Węgierska Górka of German 7th Bavarian Infantry Division, so enemy could not break down the south wing of „Kraków” Army. To this day, nobody knows the exact data of loss of the warring parties. According to reports from Lt.-Col. T. After going down from the hill you can reach next bunker, „Włóczęga”, which unfortunately is not open to the public, because in the 50's on its ceiling a residencial house has been built. „Imperial Route” can lead you to the Junacki bridge – next to it you can see memorial plaque in the honor of commander of defence of Węgierska Górka, Major Kazimierz Czarkowski. The further course is arrival at main street Żywiec-Zwardoń and then the main street of a valley in Cisiec. Now the route goes along Żabniczanka river. After about 3 kilometres you can seen a belfry from 1850 in Żabnica-Myce. Then you should go toward Węgierska Górka, where you can see the monument of guerillas killed September 3th 1943. Farther is located a junction of turistic trails – Red Trail, from Abrahamów to Rysianka, Pilski, Babia Góra, Beskid Sądecki and Beskid Niski down to Rozsypaniec in Bieszczady, and Blue Road, from Prusów across Hala Boracza down to Rajczy.
